Here's a great article and photo essay on famous Alcatraz Island in the Bay in San Franciso, California. Once one of the most feared prisons in the US, it oddly enough has now become a tourist destination as part of Golden Gate park! I had always thought that Alcatraz was far more remote than it is; it's surprising to see it so close to the city.
